Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are the fatty acids that cannot be constructed in our body by any biochemical pathways; and therefore must be obtained from the diet. EFA refers only to those fats involved in biological processes, and not the fatty acids use as caloric nutrients. Another important subcomponent of EFA's is called Gamma Linolenic Acid(GLA) synthesized in the body by an “endogenous” enzyme used in both omegas 3 and 6 metabolic pathways.
